Stress!… and a free stress-busting technique
Aaaargh! ‘Phones going, deadli
nes approaching, kids to see to, exams looming, unreasonable work demands…..
Have you any idea of the toll of your health that stress can have?
Sure, stress is a word we bandy about, but in reality we are living with artificially high levels of stress hormones, adrenalin and cortisol, which means that our minds and bodies are not getting enough ‘down-time’ to regenerate and rejuvenate. I’m sure you are aware of what this can do… Unable to have a good night’s sleep, skin complaints, ulcers, anxiety, depression … all kinds of repercussions.
You can begin to gain back control with a very simple breathing technique, which brings down the level of stress hormones in the body whenever you do it. It’s really simple and its free!
It’s called 7/11 breathing, and here it is…..
- Breathe slowly, deeply and evenly from the diaphragm. This means keeping your chest and shoulders still, while your tummy goes in and out. Think of a balloon in your tummy which inflates as you breathe in and deflates slowly as you breathe out.
- Breathe in for a count of seven, through the nose, counting the numbers to yourself in your head.
- Breathe out for a count of eleven, as slowly as you can through the nose, counting the numbers to yourself in your head.
- Continue for a few minutes. As you continue you cannot help but relax!
If you start to do this for just a few minutes at least twice a day, you will find your sleep patterns improving and start to feel better. Sometime the best things are the simplest!
As you begin to become more calm and in control, then you can begin to look at what it is in your life, now, in the past, or in the future which is causing the stress, and I would be very happy to help you deal with these issues as soon as you are ready to.
